Waldorf Knitting and Handwork – beginning level, age 6 - 9
Tuesdays 2:30 - 4:00
If you are not sure of your child’s level, please contact Elizabeth
Knitting fosters fine motor skills and visual tracking, as well as other foundational academic skills in a developmentally appropriate and enjoyable way. It teams the two hands and the two sides of the brain together, and encourages goal-oriented planning and perseverance. Neuroscientific studies have shown knitting fosters improved cognitive functioning, sustained focus, careful planning, imaginative and practical thinking, resilience, and has therapeutic and self-regulating effects.
This class will focus on mastering basic skills such as plain knitting, casting on, and casting off, and will introduce purling. Each student will make several small items, and achieve a level of comfort, mastery, and pride in their accomplishments. Children are always proud of their tangible successes, and this confidence spills over into other subjects. And it’s really fun!
The children will also be learning verses and poems, hearing stories, and doing some occasional short term projects as well. They will learn and practice cording, braiding, and other traditional textile skills.
Waldorf Knitting & Handwork – intermediate level age 9+

Neuroscientific studies have shown knitting fosters improved cognitive functioning, sustained focus, careful planning, imaginative and practical thinking, resilience, and has therapeutic and self-regulating effects.
This class will focus on intermediate skills, for students reasonably comfortable with purling, casting on, casting off, basic plain knitting, and basic sewing skills. Each student will make several small items according to their skill level and interest. According to interest, we may explore color patterning or texture patterning and cables. Practical, concrete thinking in the early years leads to enlivened and imaginative problem-solving and out of the box abstract thinking in later years. Children are proud of their tangible accomplishments – and it’s really fun!
The students will also hear stories, and engage in some occasional short term projects as well. They will learn and practice cording, braiding, and other traditional textile skills.
Spinning & Weaving
Wednesdays 11:00 to 12:30 For ages 9 and up.
In this class students will learn the traditional fiber arts of hand-spinning yarn on a drop spindle and hand-weaving fabric on a variety of traditional looms. We will explore traditions and fibers from around the world, and I will tell stories of spinning, weaving, and dyeing with natural plant materials from many cultures, from around the world, and from historical periods reaching back thousands of years. Students will be introduced to the use and care of many natural fibers including wool, cotton, flax, alpaca, silk, mohair, and others. This class is a core unit in the 3rd grade Waldorf curriculum. All materials provided.
